The Mayor found our building award worthy because Studio PBA has been designing buildings and creating great places in Denver for 40 years. Our commitment to the urban core of Denver is evident in the various office spaces we have owned and inhabited in that time – from a renovated suite in the Elephant Coral building to a fully rehabbed building in center of the Ballpark Neighborhood. When it came time to develop and design our newest office home, we were proud to remain close to the City core with a full renovation in the heart of Uptown at 16th and Gilpin.
Studio PBA’s office building stands on an infill site within an established neighborhood made up of varied building types. Studio PBA started with a vacant one-story medical office building that had fallen into disrepair. After gutting the first floor and the basement, a vaulted open second floor studio space was added above. The design maintains the original masonry building base, grounding the building in the neighborhood fabric. New doors and windows were added in the base in select locations in order to open the interior to the street. The new second level reflects the energy of this vibrant corner by springing from its base in a colorful, vaulted, light filled form. Exterior materials are some of the most contemporary available, while still respecting the solid spirit of surrounding historic homes and offices. Studio PBA designers worked extensively with the James Hardie Siding R&D department in the first Colorado application of a brand new cementitious panel cladding system, the Hardie Reveal System. Testing and lessons learned from this installation will inform the roll out of Hardie’s Reveal System throughout the Mountain Region and the country. Exterior colors were selected to coordinate with the base building and the historic masonry of the region, while adding a contemporary twist that brightens the steetscape.
The interiors create a perfect workspace for Studio PBA’s 20+ architects and designers. Creativity and collaboration are fostered via double height studio workspaces, open conference rooms, exposed structure both old and new, and a flowing communication between ground floor and upstairs. A connection to the outdoors is clear with tall operable windows at tree top level and a rooftop patio looking west that serves as an impromptu meeting space and a perfect place for team lunches.
After inhabiting the building throughout the summer, the Studio PBA team has realized more than just the dream of working in a contemporary new office space. We’ve become ingrained in the life of the neighborhood and its rhythms. We are proud that our investment and commitment here is serving as a catalyst for ongoing positive growth and regeneration in this part of Denver.
